Important notice

Could all GBC members, or any other interested parties, please note that there is an important notice on the web site home page re the proposed expansion of opencast mining at Nant Llesg/Rhaslas Pond near Merthyr. If you go to our home page it's under News Flashes and there is a link to an objection form which we would encourage as many as poss to complete and send off. The deadline for objections is within the next week. If you can print, complete and scan it then it can be emailed to , and either way shd be for the attention of Mr. Gareth Harvey. There's also a Word version to download and fill in then re-save to email, if you haven't got a scanner for the pdf.

Bird Report 2014

East Glam Bird Report 2014 update. I have just heard from the printer and the glue binding is in progress. Expected back at the printers poss tomorrow so there's an outside chance we might get it posted b4 Christmas although obviously no telling when it might arrive. John Wilson

Stop press - delivered 251 reports to my local PO this morning so they will be going out as soon as he has printed off an applied the 251 postage labels. Thank you for your patience - it's been a long haul this year.
Stop stop press: People seem to be receiving their 2014 Bird Reports in the post now so it is timely for me to highlight and apologise for a couple of errors. In the photos opposite p.8 the middle image of 2 Black-throated Divers was actually taken by Hayden Lack, and not Paul Denning. The original caption was correct in the mock-ups sent to the printer and I missed spotting the mistake in the proof so a public apology from me to Hayden. Also re Hooded Crow, p.44. This bird was only seen on 30th Apr and was actually found by Dean Bolt, and not Graham Roblin. Graham photographed the bird later on 30th but the date in his records that we received was erroneous [29th not 30th]. Again this one slipped through the net and should have been spotted. Both Hayden and Dean have been contacted and apologised to personally. Also the re photos opposite p.62 - I believe the Long-tailed Duck was in fact the one at The Knap - Barry, and not Porthkerry.

First indoor meeting of 2015

A reminder. In case you haven't checked your programme card recently or the web site, the first indoor meeting of this year takes place  on TUES 6TH OCT. I will be giving a presentation on a trip some of us did to Sri Lanka in March last year. It's nearly finished and although I say it myself, it'll be a cracking show!  KNNR 7:45 prompt so we don't run on too late.

EGBR 2014

.....  the saga continues and I struggle on. More spp done today and I've just had a count up - only 39 more species to summarise!!!! omg. Richard Smith has chosen all the photos and sent them to me so thanks Richard. Ringing reports next to chase up. We're away for 11 days to the end of this month and we go to Canada for 2 weeks at the beginning of Sept, so not a lot is going to be done I'm afraid.

Next field trip

The next field trip is to the Blorenge Mountain by Abergavenny, on Weds 5th Aug, hoping to see, inter alia, Red Grouse. I will be away so Alan Rosney will lead. He is not back until late on 4th, so if you are intending to go please be at St Margaret's Rd at 09:30, or if you want to go straight there, the meet point will be the Foxhunter car park by the pylons here: . It might be an idea to leave a message on Alan's land line if you are going to be at St Margaret's Rd. His number is on the contacts page on the main web site. John Wilson

Sluice Farm/RGW

New sea defences between Sluice Farm & RGW, along the Rhosog Fawr reen. Work hasn't started yet, but preparations are on-going. The seawall path is closed between Sluice Farm & county boundary, although I went through no problem, crutches and all. Reading the bumph, it states a Tabb's Gout, which I take to be the small inlet more commonly known as the Sluice outlet of the Torwick reen.

Llanishen Res. Update

Llanishen Res, taken on 17/06/2015. Extent of water since last photos taken back in Sept. (see previous posting). I was told that the sluice gates are closed because of the blockage of branches & weeds etc. This is due to be cleaned and the water slowly let out. When this will happen is unknown at present. There were signs of breeding Mallard, Coot, Moorhen & Little Grebe, also several Tufted Duck were seen but no proof of any breeding. The Reservoir is out of bounds to all, however Lisvane can still be viewed from the carpark area. The gates surrounding the reservoirs are still closed to all.
